Veteran director Yukisada Isao brings to the screen early 90’s cult manga River’s Edge. Not your standard sweet coming-of-age tale, it vividly portrays the tribulations of high school kids in a Tokyo suburb, as they struggle through a brutal and unseen side of teen life. This uncompromising yet captivating story follows Haruna (Nikaido Fumi, NYAFF Rising Star Award 2014) who stands between her bullied gay friend and her bully boyfriend. As their stories intertwine with other troubled schoolmates they enter provocatively dark territory of cheating, eating disorders, and mysterious corpses, reminiscent of Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy.
