A spunky female sendup of the Hong Sangsoo genre of filmmaking, minus the male chauvinism, and with the additional bonus of poignancy and profundity: Lee Chan-sil is a down-on-her-luck film producer. The sudden death of the director she worked with for years has left her jobless and penniless. An actress friend of hers, sympathetic to her plight, hires her to do domestic chores around her house. Soon, sparks of romance fly with her new employer's French teacher. Long starved of love, she starts questioning her life choices and whether there’s still time for a change of course.
A smart metanarrative on the art of filmmaking and the sacrifices it requires, Lucky Chan-sil examines the consequences that devotion to one’s craft brings upon and whether forsaking a more settled, ordinary life is actually worth it. In many ways it’s also a feisty, ironic “ woman’s picture”, propelled by the transition from female sacrifice to female empowerment. The lead character, alert to her own flaws and vulnerability —is at the core of a story that’s both deadly serious drama and light-hearted comedy. Ultimately, it’s about the pain of real life and the failures that go with it. And it’s about putting a brave face on it.. The film got best picture from the audience at the 45th Seoul Independent Film Festival. And clearly Korean audiences know their stuff when it comes to film.
