SF8: Manxin
Available: Sept. 5 - 12, All USA
Limited seating
In a world where chance has all but disappeared, an AI fortune-telling app called “Manxin” (a pun on the Korean word for shaman) boasts a stunning 96% accuracy and has come to dominate and dictate all aspects of daily life. Omnipresent, omniscient Manxin has in effect become a new god, providing constant guidance to masses of followers who consult HIM/HER on their cell phones at every moment. Undaunted, a lone woman goes on a quest to find out answers to her sister’s death and the truth about Manxin. Her journey will raise troubling questions about the nature of fate and free will.
Praised as the Korean Black Mirror, SF8 is exemplary of the new wave of prestige TV fiction that’s found its best expression with shows like HBO’s Westworld or the aforementioned British series, where the lines between small and big screen media meld into a revolutionary visual grammar. An ambitious movie-drama crossover project between MBC, the Directors Guild of Korea, the OTT platform Wavve and the production company Soo Film, this series of stand-alone anticipation tales takes sci-fi to the next level. SF8 was released on Wavve in July while MBC started airing it on August 14.
