The Gangs, The Oscars, and The Walking Dead
Available: Aug. 28 - Sept. 12, All USA
Movie genres madly mix and mash up in this no-holds-barred, no-brow comedy about two young aspiring directors, BS (Roy Chiu, of Dear Ex fame) and Wenxi (Huang Di-yang). Sick of indulging in the stuff and fluff of pipe dreams, they decide to turn fantasy into reality and make a real zombie flick. The first step is to join the local gang run by Brother Long, a film buff who agrees to bankroll the production in exchange for casting his moll as the lead. Complications, hilarity and horror ensue. But hell, the filmmakers aren’t going to let details like severed digits or a dead body get in the way!
Unabashedly gaudy and gory, the film cleverly picks on the trend of instant classic Japanese meta horror comedy One Cut of the Dead. Director Kao used the pair’s bumpy journey as a self-mocking representation of the hardships of movie-making in Taiwan and a tongue-in-cheek tribute to how far the love of movies can take you.
