Chimera

키메라

Shot in both New York and Seoul, Chimera (키메라) is a reflection of my upbringing. The mythical creature, chimera, is a hybrid of different animals, and I believe my background is a hybrid of cultures. I’m a Korean American who is born and raised in Korea and moved to New York later in my life. This decision was heavily influenced by my father’s past in the US who immigrated to New York who then returned back to Seoul. In this film, New York and Seoul aren’t just settings, they are characters in this film and their nuances are embraced. As my experience as a Korean-American third culture kid, my main character, Ayeon, embodies the experience of belonging everywhere and nowhere, unable to fully identify ourselves, and shed light on this experience. By moving through time and space, Chimera (키메라) follows the journey of Ayeon finding family in new homes.
