The Lyricist Wannabe
Multi-hyphenate Norris Wong follows her award-winning directorial debut My Prince Edward (NYAFF 2020) with this dynamic ode to chasing one’s dream despite being stamped "mediocre" by the madding crowd. Rising actress Chung Suet Ying, like Wong a lyricist in her own right, effortlessly essays the budding-songwriter protagonist Sze as she transforms her geeky high school pipe dreams into a bloodied but unbowed adult career path rife with ego-sobering mishaps. The narrative naturalistically emulates growing up in Hong Kong, replete with the region’s signature sardonic humor and first-hand insight into its highly competitive and insular entertainment industry. Wong pulls out all the stops, from animation to VFX as well as head-turning glamor techniques and not-to-be-forgotten musical numbers, to showcase Sze evolving not only emotionally but physically in a reflection of her gradual wide awakening.
