The Tenants
In a glorious monochrome parable that mixes Franz Kafka, Edward Gorey and David Lynch into a strange (but delicious!) stew, director Yoon Eun-kyung marks his remarkable debut with a black satire of Korea’s unusual rent subsidy programs and its soul-sucking workplaces. When his teen landlord threatens to evict him, office drone Shin-dong is forced to sublet his bathroom to a newlywed couple. They may look like escapees from Tod Browning’s circus, but they are preternaturally polite… until they decide to sublet their attic. Creating a beautifully crafted, eerie otherworld, Yoon perpetually conjures up the unexpected with a light but creepy touch, with inventive characters like the AI “friends” who sit on your bed with you while you chat, but disappear at the touch of a button. Adventurous viewers won’t want to miss this instant cult classic.
