Mark Gill’s haunting biopic of iconic Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase features Tadanobu Asano in a commanding performance, radiating charm, melancholy, and manic intensity. Spanning fifty turbulent years from Shinjuku to New York’s MoMA, the film vividly portrays Fukase’s tortured artistry and obsessive genius. Supported by luminous co-star Kumi Takiuchi and enriched by the Fukase Archives, Gill blends magical realism and period authenticity, punctuated by a pulsating soundtrack. A poetic narrative woven from Fukase’s own images, the film artfully captures the beauty, madness, and profound humanity of an extraordinary life lived on the knife-edge of creativity.
