Sunshine

Filipina filmmaker Antoinette Jadaone returns boldly to youth-centered storytelling with Maris Racal (Where Is the Lie?, NYAFF 2023) as Sunshine, a teenage rhythmic gymnast whose Olympic dreams collapse upon discovering her pregnancy just before national tryouts. With abortion illegal in the Philippines, Sunshine undertakes a risky journey for a solution, encountering a mysterious girl who blurs reality and nightmare, forcing her into self-reckoning. In their third collaboration, Jadaone and Racal deliver a raw, haunting drama that courageously addresses the hopes, fears, and struggles faced by young women within a patriarchal society valuing faith over female autonomy. Powerful and urgent, Sunshine spotlights reproductive rights with emotional clarity.
