The Embers

餘燼

2006. In a crowded wet-market, a daylight stabbing draws detective Chang Chen-tze (Chang Chen) into Taiwan’s erased history. The victim’s father once belonged to a 1956 reading circle crushed in the White Terror—one strand of repression that fractured families for decades. Soy-factory heir Mo Tzu-fan (Mo Tzu-yi) pursues the same vanished thread, convinced the purge swallowed his own father. Their converging inquiries corner Mr Hsu (Chin Shih-chieh), a retired security officer guarding unspeakable deeds. In this slow-burn crime drama, Oscar-short-listed auteur Chung Mong-hong (A Sun) coaxes quietly devastating performances in a contemplation of how deeply embers of state violence can smoulder.
