Valley of the Shadow of Death

不赦之罪

Anthony Wong (Still Human, NYAFF 2019) delivers a career-defining performance in Valley of the Shadow of Death, where faith collides with unfathomable grief in Hong Kong's most daring religious drama. As Pastor Leung, whose ministry to the unhoused shatters when he faces his daughter's rapist, Wong must reconcile his Christian calling with a father's rage. The young ex-convict's arrival (George Au, revelatory) turns sanctuary into purgatory, where theology meets raw human need, and Louisa So matches Wong beat for beat as his inconsolable wife. Winner of the Keep Rolling, Keep Running program hosted by the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, the film was also nominated for the Firebird Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and featured in the Asian Future competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival. This is Hong Kong cinema at its most emotionally lacerating.
