10s Across the Borders
The splits, the duck walks, the drops, the ostrich feathers: in 10s Across the Borders, the ballroom runway lands in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines, and it goes as hard as it ever did in Harlem. Chan Sze-Wei's debut, part observational documentary and part dance film, follows three trailblazers who built Southeast Asia's underground scenes: Aurora Sun Labeija, Teddy Oricci, and Xyza Pinklady Mizrahi. One ran from a homophobic father. One was turned away by the modeling world before she found her own beauty. Across Asia, they organize balls, develop houses, and make chosen family out of people the world pushed away. All while keeping the faith in the Black and Latinx queer history that created ballroom in New York. Here, a perfect 10 is a score, a battle cry, and a way home.
