Funky Freaky Freaks
Korean youth cinema rarely comes this raw. Han Chang-lok serves it bloody and alive: shot in convulsing handheld bursts and driven by pounding sound, all teenage impulse, collision, and shock. On a stalled redevelopment block at the edge of Seoul, three misfits run their own small gang against a world that has given up on them. Yong-gi dreams of being a superhero and loves Ji-sook, who is starving herself through an arrangement she should never have made. Their bullied friend Dum-bo runs an online racket, selling worn underwear to men who think they are buying from a girl. The fragile balance holds until Woo-joo transfers in: a pretty-boy influencer Ji-sook falls for on sight. Jealousy sets everything on fire. What follows goes nowhere you expect and somewhere much worse. The winner of the Busan Film Festival Special Jury Award.
