Edo, 1810. Snow falls outside the Morita-za kabuki theater as a young samurai named Kikunosuke (Kento Nagao) cuts down the man accused of murdering his father. The crowd has just poured out of Chushingura, kabuki’s great drama of loyal revenge, and by morning the theater town has reached its verdict: a perfect act of filial justice, already passing into legend. Eighteen months later, Soichiro Kase (Tasuku Emoto), a samurai claiming ties to Kikunosuke’s family, returns to the theater with questions nobody wants answered. Actors, stagehands, and hangers-on each remember a different night, and the legend comes apart in the telling.
