The Chaser
Na Hong-jin's debut hit Korean cinema like a brick through glass: a vicious thriller about a city of moral dead zones where nobody's hands are clean, help arrives late, and institutions stall or get in the way. Kim Yoon-seok is Jung-ho, a disgraced ex-cop turned pimp whose women have started disappearing. He thinks they are stealing from him, until the same client number pops up and a missing woman named Mi-jin points him toward a blank-faced murderer already in police custody. Ha Jung-woo plays him with a calm so ordinary it becomes obscene. The police keep losing the plot; Jung-ho, running on guilt and gut feeling, may be the only man desperate enough to keep looking for the woman they have already failed.
