Turgaud
A turgaud, in the language of Genghis Khan's steppe, was a warrior-bodyguard sworn to his lord by an oath of absolute loyalty. Adilkhan Yerzhanov strips the figure of every shred of honor. Beka (Berik Aytzhanov), a frostbitten alcoholic with a murky war behind him and a copy of Hamlet in his suitcase, returns to the lawless town of Karatas to guard a corrupt strongman… and asks no questions. Then a contract killer in a wide-brimmed hat (Anna Starchenko) arrives with a silent boy in tow and a clock already ticking toward the death of the man Bek is sworn to protect. Yerzhanov himself calls his film a neo-western; it plays like a Kurosawa ronin tale rerouted through deadpan absurdity and Shakespeare. Loyalty is the armor that nothing can break through.
